What are personal effects?

Personal effects are goods for personal use. These can also be goods that you use professionally. Personal effects include, among others, removal goods, household goods, inheritance goods, or tools you need to practice your profession. The goods have been in your possession for some time and have been used. There is no intention to sell the goods or to trade with them. Newly purchased (i.e., new) goods can also be considered personal goods, especially if they form part of household contents, but this always remains subject to the assessment of customs; import duties may be payable on new goods. Goods that you buy from a foreign webshop and have shipped to the Netherlands by us are therefore not personal effects; they are commercial goods. Different rules apply to commercial goods, and different documents are required.
